Thirsty
Happy Wednesday!
We are going to look at a story in John 4 about Jesus and a Samaritan woman at a well. This story reveals our desperate need for Jesus— The Living Water. This story highlights the wonderful truth about the hope found in Jesus. By the end of this, I pray you would see that God is seeking a gracious relationship with you.
Take a moment to read these verses in John, meditate, journal, and reflect.
7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” 8 (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”
John 4:7-15
Grace upon grace upon grace. Jesus defied what was considered “culturally acceptable” by talking to the Samaritan woman, because he was a Jew and that was out of custom. Not only that, but we learn later in John 4:16-26, that this woman was also an adulteress. He willfully engaged in conversation with this woman, knowing about her 5 husbands, but still offered her salvation (the living water). Now THIS is grace!! This encounter did not happen by chance, and the account of it did not end up in the gospel of John by chance, for “God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him” (John 3:17). He is graciously relational. He purposefully pursued her.
The Living Water. The same water Jesus offered the woman at the well, he offers us today. Jesus says these things about the water he offers to the woman:
It is a gift from God.
It is living.
You will never thirst again if you drink of this water, because it is always there to satisfy your longing soul.
It becomes a spring, or a well of water. This is the reason you will never be thirsty again. One drink produces a spring that never stops flowing for eternity.
This water gives eternal life
How do you access this Living Water daily? Accessing the Living Water means reading the Word of God, praying, seeking Him, and embracing Him. This water is always available to you, if you put your faith and trust in Him—the Savior of your soul.
“37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” John 7:37-38
Reflection Question: If you haven’t had this living water, would you like to taste and see today? Would you like to drink from the well that never runs dry? Jesus does not give up, and you can choose to believe and receive Him another day, but you may not have tomorrow—for it is not promised. So come to the water, you who have no money come buy and drink (Isaiah 55:1-3). Jesus is graciously relational and is pursuing a relationship with you! May your response be just like the Samaritan woman’s response, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water (John 4:15).
