Rescue Story

Good morning and happy Friday (just in case you forgot what day it is)!!

We are going to see a glimpse of God’s rescue, love, and redemption through David’s words in 2 Samuel. I want to encourage you to pray before you read these verses and ask God to open your heart to see Him clearly as you read His word, and to feel his presence as you go about your day.

Take a moment to read these verses in 2 Samuel, meditate, journal, and reflect.

"He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters. He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me. They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was my support. He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me.”

2 Samuel 22:17-20 ESV

2 Samuel 22 is a song of David — his personal expression of gratitude to the Lord. He is thanking the Lord for rescuing him from his enemies, from deep waters of distress, from those who hated him, and from those who were mightier than himself.

I love David’s song of thanksgiving because he proclaims the following about God:

  1. God rescues

  2. God is mighty — mightier than the enemy

  3. God is a strong support

  4. God provides peace (the Hebrew for “broad place” is the opposite of an expression for being “greatly distressed”)

  5. God delights in his people

Reflection Question: Can you think of a time in your life, when God rescued you from something potentially destructive or harmful? Take some time to thank Him for rescuing you. If you can’t think of anything specific, thank Him for His might, His strong support, His peace, and His delight in you.

I also want to challenge you to pray for our world today. Pray that God would rescue us from this pandemic. As we can see in David’s song, God is a mighty, strong, and able God!

It is important to note that God doesn’t just rescue us from harm’s way on this earth, or from enemies. God’s great rescue plan for His people lies in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Jesus rescued humanity by His blood and died as a ransom, so that we could be set free if we believe in Him as our Lord and Savior. Because of this, we can come boldly into His holy presence each day as we walk in freedom. This is the story of the Gospel — God’s great plan of redemption.
