Peace Be Still
It may be April 1st, but it’s no joke that we are living though some very strange and unforeseen times.
The circumstances we are facing right now are confusing, scary, and uncertain. Perhaps you are reading this, and you are a senior in high school or college, and it doesn’t look like you will have a traditional graduation ceremony. Maybe you’re an athlete and your season was cut short. Or, you’re a parent and all of your kids are home, so you have to learn how to homeschool them. Maybe you’re a doctor or nurse, and the climate you are working in seems unbearable. You could be someone who just got laid off and is anxious about making ends meet. I could go on and on…The bottom line is this: if you are reading this, you have been affected by COVID-19 in one way or another.
With that being said, I want to offer you encouragement during this extremely difficult season. It is my hope that you would take a moment to turn off the news, quiet your mind, and turn your attention to God’s Word— the only thing that will provide true peace, comfort, and assurance.
Starting today, and for the next 30 days, I will be posting a blog with encouraging scripture, reflections, and a worship song to listen to and meditate on. My prayer is that we would all take a second during our day to pause and seek first the One who calls us to Himself.
So, let’s get this 30-day journey started!
Take a moment to read this Psalm, meditate, journal, and reflect.
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
Psalms 23:1-6
When I read this Psalm, I feel this overwhelming sense of peace and comfort. David’s words paint a beautiful picture of God’s character. I am reminded of His sovereignty, His provision, His guidance, His leadership, how He restores, His goodness and His mercy. I find it so fitting for the current times we are experiencing, that David says, “even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,” yet he still mentions these beautiful attributes of God. He says, “I will not be afraid.” David is essentially explaining how he finds peace and comfort in God even though he is facing trials. His view of God did not change just because his circumstances may have been unfavorable. He knew full well that God was the only thing he needed; therefore, he did not want anything else. God’s presence was more than anything David could want or need. He was near to David’s broken heart, and He wants to be near to you and I as well. It is my prayer we would be still enough to experience this nearness.
Reflection Question: What is keeping you from being still and/or experiencing peace today?
